The US Constitution... on Facebook

I recently found a facebook page dedicated to the US Constitution. Naturally, I investigated what I assumed would be a haven of bright, politically motivated citizens who were concerned about the state of the nation and our departure from the words of our forefathers. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Instead, what I found was a beehive of partisan knee jerking and uninformed sniping. Basically, a bad infection of Dumb.

My first post was simply "I like the US Constitution, I wish the government still followed it." I was immediately attacked by several people who must have assumed I was some kind of lunatic, and they demanded "one, just one" example of my claim. I gave them about 10 off the top of my head, and then left the stupids to soak it in. Not one of them could challenge what I said, but of course that didn't stop them from continuing their retarded bleating.

My point is that, if the discourse on that page is reflective of the nation at large, then we are truly fucked.

My second point is that if you are bored, and are looking for some way to improve this country that doesn't require moving from your computer, please go to this page and drop some knowledge on them. They need it. Bad.

edit: Looking back, this post is really harsh. But oh well, I'm not taking it down. Don't take it personally, because it isn't directed at you. It's more directed at my frustration with political discourse in general. These people at the US Constitution page are just my scapegoat. So yeah, I'm a nice guy, but not when I'm angry.

Facebook Asserts its Power

Facebook has limitless potential, and it began asserting its power recently on national television.

Last Saturday, Betty White appeared on Saturday Night Live, to the great pleasure of her fans. And why were they so pleased? Because they were the reason she was picked to host.

Months ago, fans of Betty White started a "Betty White to Host SNL" page on Facebook. The page quickly grew to half a million supporters, and SNL's executive produce Lorne Michaels took notice.

A few weeks later, Betty White hosts SNL and garnered the highest Nielson ratings in years.

Facebook power is only beginning to grow. As people realize the power of a collective voice, and as corporations and institutions realize the wisdom and profitability of listening to that voice, the power of the masses, channeled through Facebook, will only increase.

Police Using Facebook to Connect with Community

As I found in a recent news story, the Police Department of Holly Springs, NC has started a Facebook page to better communicate with Holly Springers.

This is a great use of technology to open channels of communication between citizens and the government institutions they support, and it puts a familiar face on what could be a daunting organization.

I hope this idea spreads like wildfire.

Lawyers, Judges, and Facebook

The Florida Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee is discouraging judges from being Facebook friends with lawyers.

When judges “friend” lawyers who may appear before them, the committee said, it creates the appearance of a conflict of interest, since it “reasonably conveys to others the impression that these lawyer ‘friends’ are in a special position to influence the judge.”

This seems a little overblown to me, I have hundreds of Facebook friends, yet only a handful I would consider real friends.

Luckily, the opinion of this committee is only advisory, and not legally binding.
